Meeting called to order by Paula de C. at 12:10 PM

Toastmaster Mary D.

  • Started by asking guests to introduce themselves:
  • Cary L. – works at the SFMOMA; attended two or so years ago and decided to check out the club again.
  •  Carl S. works in Berkeley, CA; did speech and debate in high school; now is doing more public speaking and would like help getting back to public speaking.
  • Talked about the theme of the meeting, about how speaking can be a revolutionary experience, especially when done through Toastmodernists, and can create revolutionary change.
  • Called on Mei C, the GE to introduce the Wordmaster/Grammarian, the Timer and Ah Counter roles, which she did.
  • The Word of the Day was “Revolution“, n. or v. as in “In Tunisia the act of one fruit stand sparked a revolution throughout the Arab world” and “The Earth completes one revolution around the Sun

Toastmaster Introduces Evaluators and Speakers

Mary:

  • Asked Matt R. to explain Speech #7 “Vocal Variety” to members and guests
  • Introduced Nicole A. and her speech “Lost in Translation”

Nicole gave Speech #6 from the Competent Communication Manual.

  • Talked about nuances that “get lost in translation” including nuances regarding gestures, culture, written and spoken communication.
  • Advised audience to know their audience by reading their gestures and to slow down in speech by using analogies

1 minute Written Evaluations

Paula de C. Led the Table Topics portion of the meeting “Oscar Acceptance Speeches”

Called on members and guests to “accept their awards”

  • Cary for “Best Animation”
  • Mei for “Best Animal Trainer”
  • Carl for “Best Painter of the Year”
  • Mary for “Best Musical Score”

General Evaluation was led by Mei

Mei called Matt to give an evaluation of Nicole’s speech, which he then did.

Mei also called on the WOD/Grammarian, Ah Counter and Timer reports.

Mei then gave her overall impression of the meeting, that Table Topics was fun and a great theme, that the WOD was well chosen since a lot of members and guests used the word, and that the Evaluator did a good job of evaluating the speech given.

Mary made closing remarks and announcements
